It's doable...the flower wall art

 What started it all...

This was inspired by another Pinterest viewer, of which I've tried desperately to track down, I'm in the works though!-- The search comes to an end!! Thank you, CANDICE for such a beautiful and fun craft!! I have loved seeing all of the flowers that others have come up with :)

This is quite an easy project and it cost me a total of $13! I went to Michael's and bought the following:

-1 12x16 inch canvas $5.99 (with 40% off coupon, originally $9.99)

-1 Artist's Loft 4 oz acrylic grey paint $3.99 (I used the excess on this project)

-5 pieces of scrap book paper $3 total

I had the following:

-Mini hot glue gun and glue sticks (Michael's has these for about $3)

-Foam paint brushes (Michael's has these for about $1.50)

-Mod Podge (Please read reader comments before using)

STEPS:

1) Paint your canvas. Put the paint in a disposable container and paint it on, it will be see through at this time.  Before you add a second coat, you must let it dry completely or it'll come off when you brush over it.

2) While your first coat is drying, cut a 2 inch wide strip off the bottom of each of your scrap book papers. Don't measure these cuts, just eyeball them.

3) Then cut that strip into 2-3 inch rectangles.

4) Starting at one corner of the square make a curved cut to the opposite corner.

5) And back again.

6) Ta-da you have a leaf now! Repeat this process and make them smaller and larger... I found that I made too many large ones (over 3 inches) and had to scale them down later.

7) Once you have a good sized pile of them, add your second coat of paint to your canvas.  Remember to paint the edges too!

8) Let your canvas dry completely (I watched a movie).  And begin to lay the leaves out starting with your center circle. (You can follow my picture below to get you started).

9) As you lay them out you might have to trim some leaves smaller or cut other larger ones.  If you look closely I started with smaller leaves and as I worked my way out I used larger ones.

10) Now comes the fun part (sarcastism). Carefully pick up the center circle and stick some hot glue on it and put it back.  Work your way out doing the same things on the leaves.  When it gets to the edge  wrap it over.

That's it!

IMPORTANT: Use Mod Podge wisely, I did not use Mod Podge because I liked the matte finish.  One reader used it and said it ruined it because of the canvas.  However, another reader used it and said it came out just fine.  I would test the Modge Podge, (maybe on a side corner) before painting over the whole thing.

I'd love to see your creations and hear your comments so send 'em my way!!

Like this project? You might also enjoy this one!

Thank you do much for sharing! I just completed this for my bedroom and loved it! It was very easy and looks amazing.

What if you just mod podge the leaves themselves to seal the edges. Maybe spray paint the whole project with a matte polyureathne? That would seal the whole project and make it easy to wipe clean.

I will be doing this project this week - Picked up a 12x16 canvas at the dollar store for $2! Instead of glue dots, hot glue or glue stick, I will be running all my leaf shapes through my Xyron sticker-maker. I do want to seal and protect the project when it is done - not much point in making something that will need to be thrown out in a month because of sun-fade, dust or too much or too little moisture in the air. I might just get some non-yellowing spray sealant.

I made this project this weekend and it turned out great!!! I love it! I now have it hanging up in my sunroom. I used Matte Mod Podge on it and I had absolutely no problems with the Mod Podge on the canvas. So I don't really understand why people did, maybe their canvas wasn't completely dry. I also used thin Glue Dots instead of hot glue and that worked great. Thanks again for a great project!

Mine's finished! here's the link. Its obviously much larger, but matches my bedroom! https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=846375277198&set=a.732835970878.2211116.219700048&type=1&theater

How wonderful! I did this last night and brought it into work to hang - everyone loves it! I have one question: is there something I can do to prevent the corners from turning up and flying away? I used a hot glue gun and kinda wussed out when it came to the corners and edges :).

Thank you all for sharing your pictures, variations, and tips on this project! I am enjoying hearing about all of your success much more than I even enjoy the one I created!
@Amber- I left my edges up... if you project is going to have contact with sun or if you want it to last longer just Mod Podge the whole thing. They will still be 'up off' the canvas a bit but as long as the whole leaf is sealed, the color should be preserved.
@Corri- I think matte or glossy would be just fine. I tend to lean toward matte but that is just my preference!

When selecting your artwork, look at items that literally jump off your walls. Look for vessels plates or pottery in a contrasting yet coordinating color to your wallpaper background. Look for a seldom-used accent color in the wallpaper that you can highlight in the art.

Thanks for the fun idea! I added little adhesive jewel beads to mine. :) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150813103928852.516369.515208851&type=3&l=4a7b0d68de

I just made this today. I had a canvas that I messed up when I tried (and failed) to paint a picture, so I just painted over it and decoupaged away! I used the matte Mod Podge and it worked just fine. I noticed that the edges of the petals puckered a bit, but I think if I do it again, I might use regular glue, or I might use more hot glue. Thanks for the great project!

I am going to try this also. I have used Mod Podge and have had mixed results in the past. In light of this, I am going to use Perfect Paper Adhesive (available at the craft stores). It is a good alternative to the Mod Podge, which can get sticky in humid climates. It is also available in gloss or matte. Another idea is gel medium but it is a bit more money. Thanks for the great idea and tutorial!

I LOVELOVELOVE this, and I was planning on making it this weekend, but I've realized my boyfriend might hate it in our apartment.

I need a way to make it less girly- more neutral. Maybe not a flower pattern, but something different. Any thoughts??

February 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterE

Honestly the flower isn't too girly... But if you're wanting it more gender neutral think about changing the colors. Maybe black, white, grey and yellow? I have a similar snowflake post that you might want to look at too. It's at the bottom of the flower art as a link, or you can find it under Find a Project-Wall art. Let me know what you end up with!

February 28, 2012 | Registered CommenterCrystal (Chica)

You can use Acrylic Matte Medium too. Its not as shiny as Modge Pod, and will keep your art safe and keep the edges from not peeling over. Just brush a coat over the finihsed piece! I reccomend testing a corner first! Paint only one coat, a second coat will make the scrapbooking paper ink come up.

February 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLizzy

Amazing!very creative.I like your share because it is something unique and beautiful decoration.Well I will post also my stuff after I finish it.

February 29, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterwall art

Would it be possible to use clear acrylic spray paint instead of mod podge?

February 29, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDawn

Can I use regular wall paint on the canvas? Also, rather than ModPodge, could a coat of varnish work?

March 1, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMary Beth

I just finished mine and love it!!! My bedroom is muted yellow with one red accent wall and have been looking for a year for something to hang on the walls. My furniture is brown and I chose muted reds, browns, yellow for the petals and spray painted my canvas brown. I sprayed it one night, the next night when completely dry. I used glue dots for the petals, and crafting glue for the hangover pieces to glue to the sides of the canvas. Next night was the mod podge after I was sure everything was dry....no problems. Thank you!
My youngest daughter is now pregnant with twin boys that are due in July, her theme is owls, I'm creating that in my mind, any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I have everything laid out on my dining room table. I created two 24x36 inch ones but none of the glues I have tried are working! I have read through the comments, but not luck. I originally used scrapbook stickers, but they didn't hold after a few minutes. So today I bought Elmers extra strong craft glue sticks. No luck after less than thirty seconds they start peeling up. I hate glue guns and was really trying to avoid them, especially how large this project is, but is that my only option? Please, any help you can offer would be much appreciated. I also bought the ModPodge sealant matte spray to test and a spare leaf I had bled in about 15 seconds, so that won't work! I really want to seal it since my dining room where I plan to hang this is connected with my kitchen so there's the possibility of it peeling up. Any thoughts on that front as well would be great! Thanks everyone :)
