It's doable...the flower wall art
Monday, January 23, 2012 at 12:58PM What started it all...

This was inspired by another Pinterest viewer, of which I've tried desperately to track down, I'm in the works though!-- The search comes to an end!! Thank you, CANDICE for such a beautiful and fun craft!! I have loved seeing all of the flowers that others have come up with :)
This is quite an easy project and it cost me a total of $13! I went to Michael's and bought the following:
-1 12x16 inch canvas $5.99 (with 40% off coupon, originally $9.99)
-1 Artist's Loft 4 oz acrylic grey paint $3.99 (I used the excess on this project)
-5 pieces of scrap book paper $3 total
I had the following:
-Mini hot glue gun and glue sticks (Michael's has these for about $3)
-Foam paint brushes (Michael's has these for about $1.50)
-Mod Podge (Please read reader comments before using)
STEPS:
1) Paint your canvas. Put the paint in a disposable container and paint it on, it will be see through at this time. Before you add a second coat, you must let it dry completely or it'll come off when you brush over it.
2) While your first coat is drying, cut a 2 inch wide strip off the bottom of each of your scrap book papers. Don't measure these cuts, just eyeball them.
3) Then cut that strip into 2-3 inch rectangles.
4) Starting at one corner of the square make a curved cut to the opposite corner.
5) And back again.
6) Ta-da you have a leaf now! Repeat this process and make them smaller and larger... I found that I made too many large ones (over 3 inches) and had to scale them down later.
7) Once you have a good sized pile of them, add your second coat of paint to your canvas. Remember to paint the edges too!
8) Let your canvas dry completely (I watched a movie). And begin to lay the leaves out starting with your center circle. (You can follow my picture below to get you started).
9) As you lay them out you might have to trim some leaves smaller or cut other larger ones. If you look closely I started with smaller leaves and as I worked my way out I used larger ones.
10) Now comes the fun part (sarcastism). Carefully pick up the center circle and stick some hot glue on it and put it back. Work your way out doing the same things on the leaves. When it gets to the edge wrap it over.
That's it!
IMPORTANT: Use Mod Podge wisely, I did not use Mod Podge because I liked the matte finish. One reader used it and said it ruined it because of the canvas. However, another reader used it and said it came out just fine. I would test the Modge Podge, (maybe on a side corner) before painting over the whole thing.
I'd love to see your creations and hear your comments so send 'em my way!!

Janessa, I too had a tough time finding a good adhesive. I finally settled on Mod Podge to adhere the paper to the canvas. I used the matte version and lightly applied it to the back of each leaf. I then pressed it on and moved on to the next one. It would curl a little and then I would just press it back down. I had to do that several times unt the Mod Podge tacked up and layed down flat. I then let that sit overnight and using the same mod Podge matte, I applied two coats the next day drying between coats. I've made six so far using that method and think they hold up well. I didn't even bother with the sealer spray, IMO the 2 coats of mod Podge worked just fine. If you want to see mine, I'm on Pinterest. Search for Kristi Nellor and they're on my board, "Which craft? My craft!". Good luck!
Thanks for the quick reply! However, the Mod Podge seems to make one of the papers I used bleed. It's not card stock like the other ones, it's a thinner paper so I think it's not as color fast as the others. So Modge Podge is a no go. I checked out your canvases though and they are great! Thanks for sharing. Any other ideas friends?
Randomly came across this on pintrest. I made this project and I'm so happy with it I'm going to make another one to hang in a pair! Thank you so much for posting this.
Absolutely stunning....will be doing this very soon.. Thanks for sharing..
Has anyone tried the spray modgepodge coating? I saw it in Walmart the other day and wondered if it might work better. Or maybe just clear coat spray paint? Curious what the other readers thought.
Fun project! I made two one big and mini!
Thanks for the idea and simple directions! I made one today! I used colors from my bedroom...now I just have to decide which wall to hang it on! Thanks!!
I made this the other day, and it turned out so amazing. I didn't use Mod Podge ( I was too afraid) but I like how it looks without it as well. Thanks so much for the idea!!! I posted it on my Facebook and got so many compliments and feedback.
I had a bunch of old CDs in my room I needed to get rid of. I saw this on Pinterest and decided to do a modified version. I used the CD covers/booklets and simply glue-stuck them on to a piece of metallic posterboard. Then I wrote in a cute little quote and put it in a $10 16 x 20 frame from Michael's.
Quote: "music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life"

Whoa. Jessica, that is awesome!! Thanks for posting all your versions everyone... The ideas are amazing!!
I absolutely love your ideas. Just moved into an apartment with blank walls.
I made one this weekend and it turned out beautiful! What a fun project...thank you!
I think if you want to Modge Podge your art on the canvas, you have to paint the canvas with some Gesso or some kind of canvas treatment before you add the leaves, then you can Modge Podge all you want.
this is gorgeous! quick question - do you have any recommendations for what scrapbook paper sheets to use? or perhaps a photo of the full sheets you used? thanks!
I love making this project. I've made this twice and I found my art very successful. Thanks to this blog.
I have just completed 6 different pieces of this wall art. I used my cricut to cut the leaf shapes. I created a large square one for myself. I then created 5 smaller ones for friends and famliy. I tried to 'match' the color schemes to the art work. I LOVE the one I made for myself! I have also created a few smaller pieces using Mickey Mouse paper for my nephews room. Thanks for the inspiration.
What happens if you do not use midge lodge or another kind of sealer? I want to make this but I am nervous about ruining it.
Making your own decor for your house would make it look more personalized. One good thing about it too is that it really suites your taste since you are the one who made it.

Easy to make designs but it resulted a very great wall art. I love the concept of making your own design. A very great contribution.
