It's doable...the flower wall art
Monday, January 23, 2012 at 12:58PM What started it all...

This was inspired by another Pinterest viewer, of which I've tried desperately to track down, I'm in the works though!-- The search comes to an end!! Thank you, CANDICE for such a beautiful and fun craft!! I have loved seeing all of the flowers that others have come up with :)
This is quite an easy project and it cost me a total of $13! I went to Michael's and bought the following:
-1 12x16 inch canvas $5.99 (with 40% off coupon, originally $9.99)
-1 Artist's Loft 4 oz acrylic grey paint $3.99 (I used the excess on this project)
-5 pieces of scrap book paper $3 total
I had the following:
-Mini hot glue gun and glue sticks (Michael's has these for about $3)
-Foam paint brushes (Michael's has these for about $1.50)
-Mod Podge (Please read reader comments before using)
STEPS:
1) Paint your canvas. Put the paint in a disposable container and paint it on, it will be see through at this time. Before you add a second coat, you must let it dry completely or it'll come off when you brush over it.
2) While your first coat is drying, cut a 2 inch wide strip off the bottom of each of your scrap book papers. Don't measure these cuts, just eyeball them.
3) Then cut that strip into 2-3 inch rectangles.
4) Starting at one corner of the square make a curved cut to the opposite corner.
5) And back again.
6) Ta-da you have a leaf now! Repeat this process and make them smaller and larger... I found that I made too many large ones (over 3 inches) and had to scale them down later.
7) Once you have a good sized pile of them, add your second coat of paint to your canvas. Remember to paint the edges too!
8) Let your canvas dry completely (I watched a movie). And begin to lay the leaves out starting with your center circle. (You can follow my picture below to get you started).
9) As you lay them out you might have to trim some leaves smaller or cut other larger ones. If you look closely I started with smaller leaves and as I worked my way out I used larger ones.
10) Now comes the fun part (sarcastism). Carefully pick up the center circle and stick some hot glue on it and put it back. Work your way out doing the same things on the leaves. When it gets to the edge wrap it over.
That's it!
IMPORTANT: Use Mod Podge wisely, I did not use Mod Podge because I liked the matte finish. One reader used it and said it ruined it because of the canvas. However, another reader used it and said it came out just fine. I would test the Modge Podge, (maybe on a side corner) before painting over the whole thing.
I'd love to see your creations and hear your comments so send 'em my way!!

Without having read all of the posts -- I made this a couple of weeks ago. I use Mod Podge a lot and love it. Colors can bleed, though, with Mod Podge. To remedy this, after I painted the canvas with acrylic paint, I let it dry for about an hour or so. I used this time to cut out the petals. I made 2 templates (one bigger than the other) and then traced the template onto the back of the scrapbook paper. I sprayed it with a clear acrylic sealer. Then I used a glue stick only to position the petals where I wanted them (I don't think glue stick will adhere permanently to this surface). Once I had the petals where I wanted them, I used Mod Podge to anchor them. I only Mod Podged the back of the petals and then put them in place on the canvas. After all of the petals were completely Mod Podged to the canvas, I let it dry. Then I sprayed another coat of clear acrylic sealer. I let it dry, then put another coat of Mod Podge down. Worked perfectly and no colors bled.
I saw this on pinterest a couple of days ago and just got around to doing it. I loved te way it turned out! But instead of using scrapbook paper I used paint swatches, worked just as well and saved me a few dollars!
Thank you so much for this wonderful inspiration! I just finished mine last night and it turned out quite nicely. My petals were a lot smaller than most of the ones that I've seen so I had a ton to glue on! And this was my first time using Mod Podge so I ended up with a few wrinkles but overall not too bad :)
Hi. I love this! If I'm doing the project with kids, do you have any idea what glue I could used besides hot glue? Thanks!
Thanks for sharing...I'm into DIY project's so I will have to try this one....!!!
Thanks again for sharing...!!!
Love the project! Just made it tonight on a 12 x 12 canvas and I love how it turned out! I glued down the paper petals with Modge Podge but did not cover the top because I wanted a matte canvas look.
I just made this today and it turned out great. I am still deciding if I should seal it. Thanks for the great idea! Not sure how to post a picture so you can see it.
I absolutely love this! I finally got around to making one out of fabric that I bought in Zambia. Once looking at yours I realized I made mine my own. Thank you for posting this!
I picked up 2- 12x12" canvases that had some unstylish topiary theme on them from a yard sale a few summers back and just waited for inspiration to strike. My little $1 investment is now the flower wall art! I did both in gray with antique dictionary paper petals (thanks thrift store 50cent book section). I will finish these with a spray, I did a test section on an edge and the paper immediately buckled. They will be part of a 3-some. One flower canvas on each side and one "webster wreath" in the middle (http://pinterest.com/pin/279434351850447702/).
Just finished this. Not bad for my first DIY project! I used matte mod podge and it kind of crinkled my petals but I think it is still going to look good. Want to make one for each room of my house!
I made this a few weeks ago however, rather than cutting the petals by hand I found a similar shape on a Cricut cartridge and was able to cut multiple sizes of the same shape... I also used the matte midge podge with success!
I am so happy I found your site on Pinterest! I just finished this project and LOVE the way it turned out. You have earned yourself a new follower for sure!
Thanks for the inspiration!

I made this today. Turned out pretty good. I used mod podge too. The only thing I would do different is I would only put one layer of mod podge on. I did one layer and it was perfect. For some reason I thought I should do two layers and upon doing that some of the scraps bubbled up. Still looks pretty good though.
What about using fabric instead of scrapbook paper...just have so many little bits of fabric, wondered if this might be a way of using them up?
Hi. My step daughters(6 and 8) made this tonight on a piece of dark stained wood ( a shelf from a tv cabinet) with a cut up picasso poster ( i hope he isn't rolling in his grave). I am going to try to seal it with spay shellac, I hope it works. I put it up over my kitchen sink, it is kind of wonky, as things made by little hands tend to be, but it is colorful and fun. thank you for the inspiration. - laura, brianna and brooke
For those persons who were thinking of trying this project with fabric, they might prepare swatches of fabric beforehand with spray starch. It will add stiffness to the fabric and make it less absorbent, so it won't soak up all the glue or Modge Podge. The fabric can then be ironed while damp and sprayed again to make more stiff. Too much may cause some starch to flake off, though. Now the fabric is easier to cut and glue.
love the art work but would like to know the color of the wall...
I made this with my best friend and we mod podged over the whole thing with matte finish mod podge and it turned out great. We actually didn't use hot glue to stick the petals down, we just used mod podge. We just dabbed it on the back with a foam brush and stuck them down then went over the whole thing when they were all stuck down. I'm not sure why someone would say mod podge doesnt work on canvas...it works on everything! I love the stuff!! It always dries clear and you can get it in matte and high gloss finish.
